The Journey of Bioinformatics in Kerala: A Legacy of Visionary Mentors
Dr. Oommen V. Oommen
The story of bioinformatics in Kerala begins with Prof. Oommen V. Oommen, an Emeritus Scientist, who is considered the pioneer of bioinformatics in the state. In 2005, he helped establish the Centre for Bioinformatics, which later became the Department of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (DCB) at the University of Kerala. His hard work and dedication made bioinformatics a popular field in Kerala, even when it was not well-known across the country.
Prof. Achuthsankar S. Nair
Prof. Achuthsankar S. Nair, who studied at the College of Engineering, Trivandrum, IIT Bombay, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Kerala, brought invaluable expertise to the department. A distinguished leader in computer science and artificial intelligence, Prof. Nair applied advanced computing techniques to biological research, making bioinformatics a dynamic and highly relevant field. Under his leadership, the department grew into one of the most respected bioinformatics centers in the country.
